Introduction

Watch the example lab video, and then perform the lab.

 

 

Instructions

  1. Follow the guidelines on the Lab Expectations page.
  2. Print off the drawing template found at the start of this module. (If you cannot print the drawing, draw the template on a piece of paper.)
  3. Write your initials in the "Drawn By:" section of the template drawing.
  4. Write the date in the "Date:" section of the template drawing.
  5. Write the lab number in the "Drawing #" section of the template drawing.
  6. Write the title of the lab in the "title" section of the template drawing.
  7. Legibly draw up the following schematic using the drawing template and drawing legend. (Note: Refer to AMAR-1200-01 - AC Amps Measurement.pdf and AMAR-1200-02 - DC Amps Measurement.pdf found in previous modules for examples on how to properly draw a schematic.)
  8. Draw DC power supply.
  9. Draw a SPDT switch in series with a fan and solenoid in series. Make sure to insert a 50 Ω (3W) resistor in series before the solenoid.
  10. Label all wires with the appropriate color.
  11. Wire up the circuit per your drawing.
  12. Check if the circuit works. (Note: the solenoid will not come on but the fan will. Check regardless of which is first, the solenoid or the fan.)
  13. Measure the voltage drop across the fan.
  14. Measure the voltage drop across the resistor and solenoid.
  15. Measure the amps to the fan.
  16. Measure the amps to the solenoid.
  17. Explain why the solenoid doesn't work.

 

   Warning!  
 

Wiring for the fan is critical; Red is +, Black is -, and White or Blue is not used. 

Failure to connect it correctly will smoke the fan!

 

 

 

   Warning!  
  The resistor and solenoid can get very hot. Only run the solenoid for short periods of time 30 seconds or less.
