Welcome to the ATE Central Connection! Published the first Monday of each month, the ATE Central Connection is meant to disseminate information to and about ATE centers and projects, providing you with up-to-date ATE news, events, reminders, as well as highlighting new centers, projects, and resources. In addition, we will also highlight an educational topic with complementary resources found within ATE Central to help illustrate how ATE resources can be used in the classroom.

Marine Advanced Technology Education Center

The Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center is a national partnership of organizations working to improve marine technical education and helping to prepare America's future workforce for ocean occupations. The MATE Center focuses its efforts in eight major areas: 1) supporting institutions interested in developing or improving technology-related education programs; 2) assessing workforce needs and developing knowledge and skill guidelines for new and emerging ocean occupations; 3) developing curricula in marine technology, underwater robotics, marine geospatial technology, career awareness, and ocean observing systems; 4) offering professional development for high school, college, and university faculty that focuses on a broad array of marine technologies, workplace skills, and pedagogical innovations; 5) conducting regional and international underwater robotics (ROVs) competitions to increase students' learning experiences and build academic and employer partnerships; 6) improving student preparation for the workplace through at-sea and shore-based technical internships; 7) disseminating MATE products, including curricula, textbooks, occupational guidelines, competencies, and process guides (internship manuals, survey materials, etc.) both in traditional formats and electronically though the Center's web site; 8) disseminating up-to-date, comprehensive workforce information via OceanCareers.com which MATE created in partnership with the Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE).

The Bridge: An Ocean of Free Teacher-Approved Marine Education Resources

The Bridge, from the Virginia Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program, is a growing collection of the best marine education resources available online. It provides educators with a convenient source of accurate and useful information on global, national, and regional marine science topics, and gives researchers a contact point for educational outreach. On the site, visitors will find lesson plans, career information for students, and a resource center of books, links, aquariums and more.

Career Opportunities Outdoors and Underwater

The ATETV project delivers web-based videos to connect students to careers in advanced technology. In this episode of ATETV, marine technology and environmental technology are discussed. A student competition of remotely operated underwater vehicle technology is shown in the video. Employees with training and experience in this technology are in high demand in the workforce, and industry is using such competitions as scouting opportunities. In technological programs like the ones shown here, students gain hands-on experience that prepares them for the workplace. The episode can be watched in full or through the two segments: Diving into A Marine-Based Career and Environmental Technology Takes to the Great Outdoors. The Role of Marine Reserves in Ecosystem-based Fishery Management

This instructional guide is designed to provide educators with lecture support on the topic of marine reserves with an emphasis on their role in ecosystem-based fishery management. The benefits of marine reserves are discussed, as well as some of the considerations in the design and management of marine reserve networks.

A general lecture outline and a more detailed PowerPoint presentation with instructor notes are provided. Print, video and web-based resources that cover the topic are summarized and cited.

ATE@20

Personalizing the ATE@20 Experience

Over the past 20 years the ATE Program has grown to provide concurrent support for 45 centers and 229 projects in the United States and US territories. This vast community has been dedicated to improving the education of America's technical workforce through innovative research and successful partnerships. Over the past few weeks, a number of inspirational stories and personal experiences have been highlighted on the ATE@20 blog. Welcome New Projects and Centers!

Every year, the ATE community has the privilege of welcoming new projects and centers as well as veterans who have received new funding. If you fall into one of these categories, congratulations! We would like to take this space to talk a little bit about what ATE Central can do for new and established members of the ATE community.

The mission of ATE Central is to support and amplify the work of ATE projects and centers. As many of you know, ATE Central combines an online portal that houses a collection of freely available materials highlighting the work of ATE projects and centers with a variety of tools and services. The portal, tools and services are designed to help ATE grantees, other educators, students, and the general public learn about and use materials from the entire depth and breadth of the ATE program. The portal aggregates information about ATE centers and projects, as well as the materials they develop, the events they host, and more.

Here, you can learn more about how ATE Central can benefit your project or center through by providing you with support for finding partners and collaborators, outreach, managing and sharing deliverables, evaluation, and technology and tools.

Did you know?

The ocean economy is large and diverse, consisting of six sectors: construction, living resources, minerals, ship and boat building, tourism and recreation, and transportation. According to the National Ocean Policy Coalition, jobs in these sectors represent one in six jobs in the country and account for twenty percent of our national economy.
