Welcome to the ATE Central Connection! Published the first Monday of each month, the ATE Central Connection is meant to disseminate information to and about ATE centers and projects, providing you with up-to-date ATE news, events, reminders, as well as highlighting new centers, projects, and resources. In addition, we will also highlight an educational topic with complementary resources found within ATE Central to help illustrate how ATE resources can be used in the classroom.

We want the ATE Central Connection to be a valuable tool; please e-mail info@atecentral.net with any suggestions about how to make the ATE Central Connection more useful for you or to suggest any information you would like to see in an upcoming issue.

Guitar Primer

http://www.collabnfab.org/resources/guitar_primer_v2.pdf

This resource provides an introduction to the basic parts of the guitar and the manufacturing process. Detailed diagrams are included that illustrate the terminology for the various parts of a guitar. The document goes on to relate different styles of guitars to their various manufacturers, and a variety of links to manufacturer websites are also included. The guitar's bridge, scale length, head stock design, and some of the more complicated aspects of guitar craftsmanship are discussed in this interesting introduction to the manufacturing of guitars.

Design in 3D

http://nextgenmfg.org/course/view.php?id=13&section=2

This course component, provided by the Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing (RCNGM), contains valuable information and reference material on 3D (three-dimensional) printing. On this page, users will learn about the basics of design and prototyping for 3D printers. "All 3D objects begin with an idea and a design. Designs can begin as a simple sketch on a piece of paper or as a drawing in a 3D drawing program on a tablet or computer. The design tools available today range from simple mobile Apps that are easy to use to complex software applications requiring powerful desktop computers." Several links to software applications for 3D design are available, as well as a TED Talks video, and links to several resources which include industry applications, case studies, and software recommendations. Users must create a free login before viewing this resource.

From Center for Advanced Automotive Technology (CAAT):

Aluminum in Commercial Vehicles

http://autocaat.org/WebForms/ResourceDetail.aspx?id=1473

This manual created by the European Aluminium Association is a comprehensive compilation of aluminum use in commercial applications. Discussed are application, design, joining, treatment, cleaning, repair, and various methods of processing aluminum. Although this report is of particular interest to design engineers, process engineers, repair managers and maintenance managers, it’s also very useful to anyone interested in aluminum development and use in transportation.

Community Connection

Accessing Content from the 2014 ATE PI Conference

This year’s ATE PI Conference in Washington, DC brought together hundreds of representatives from projects, centers, NSF, AACC, and industry partners as well as students to share successes, learn from each other, and celebrate the various components that make up the wonderful ATE community.

The conference theme, Navigating the Future of Advanced Technological Education: Developing Leaders, Broadening Impact, highlighted numerous possibilities for advanced technological education. Plenary sessions featured keynote speakers Keith J. Masback, Esther J. Cepeda, Mark Mitsui, and Chandra Brown, as well as a wonderful tribute to retiring NSF program directors Duncan McBride and Gerhard Salinger. Additionally, roundtable discussions, workshops, and informational sessions focused on diverse topics from archiving to training renewable energy technicians to engaging STEM students outside of the classroom. A complete listing of the conference agenda is available at the AACC website if you didn’t manage to make it to all of the sessions.

The showcases this year were lively, and offered a welcoming space to connect and share information and outcomes with others in the community. Projects, centers and students provided materials about their tremendous work and initiatives during these informal sessions, and NSF staff were readily available to answer questions and connect with ATE grantees.

For those hoping to follow up after attending the sessions as well as those unable to make it this year, conference presentations, videos, and photographs will be available on the conference website, so check back soon! Additionally, handouts from ATE Central’s presentations and showcase are available on the ATE Central website.

ATE Success Tips: Outreach

Outreach and dissemination are essential components of demonstrating the broader impacts of your project or center’s work. Many of us consider the ATE PI Conference one of the best venues to learn about outreach planning from peers and community experts, to consider new audiences, and to share outreach successes and challenges. This year’s meeting placed a special emphasis on the powers of outreach, with keynote speakers and many sessions including sections on outreach efforts, strategies, and successes.

Now is a great time to revisit or start afresh with your outreach plans. Check out the ATE Central Outreach Quick-Start Guide for a great tool to help you with your first steps or explore the more detailed and in-depth ATE Outreach Kit for special support for new projects or centers curious about how to fulfill outreach and dissemination requirements of ATE grants.
