Welcome to the ATE Central Connection! Published the first Monday of each month, the ATE Central Connection is meant to disseminate information to and about ATE centers and projects, providing you with up-to-date ATE news, events, reminders, as well as highlighting new centers, projects, and resources. In addition, we will also highlight an educational topic with complementary resources found within ATE Central to help illustrate how ATE resources can be used in the classroom.

We want the ATE Central Connection to be a valuable tool; please e-mail info@atecentral.net with any suggestions about how to make the ATE Central Connection more useful for you or to suggest any information you would like to see in an upcoming issue.

This page contains two collections of documents explaining the basics of teaching nanoscience. The intent of these instructor guides is to help an educator through the basic content, material flow, and objectives for the study of this subject. Topics include Scale Matters, Tools of Nanoscience, Biological World, Materials Science and Structure, Optical Properties and Devices, and Semiconductor Devices.

From NNF:

What is Nano?

This video provided by the University of Cambridge was created for the NANOYOU Project and is intended as a resource for students, teachers, and anyone interested in a quick introduction to nanoscience. Researchers are shown exploring topics such as light at the nanoscale, hydrophilic surfaces, nano materials in manufacturing products, and nanotechnology in the medical field. The video runs 17:39 minutes in length and is available free for download.

From Seattle’s Hub for Industry-driven Nanotechnology Education (SHINE):

Nanotechnology Lab Instruments

This page from Seattle's Hub for Industry-driven Nanotechnology Education (SHINE) lists instruments in the SHINE Nanotechnology Lab. These include Aspex Explorer SEM/EDS, Leica S430 SEM, and Nanosurf AFM. Each instrument's individual page includes a picture, description, key features, and material restrictions. Students in the SHINE program receive hands-on training to operate these instruments.

ATECentral Search Results

Community Connection

Searching the ATE Central Resource Collection—What You Need to Know

Each year, the ATE community produces hundreds or even thousands of new resources. These can range from lesson plans to videos to professional development materials, and more. Information about these resources can be found in the ATE Central resource collection, where items have been cataloged using standardized metadata to make it easy to find whatever you're looking for.

Keyword Search
For a quick keyword search, simply enter a search term into the keyword search bar in the upper right corner of the ATE Central homepage. This form of searching is most useful when you want an overview of the resources that include particular keywords, and is often a great starting point for a search that can then be narrowed to focus on the most useful results. In addition to relevant resources, search results can include related projects and centers, upcoming events, ATE@20 blog posts, and other content on the ATE Central site.

Advanced Search
The advanced search option is ideal for conducting more complex searches. For example, if you're interested in finding out what kinds of materials the ATE community has produced for high school biology education, you can enter “biology” as a keyword search term and then limit your search by Education Level. This requires some forethought and extra effort, but may find resources specific to your needs more quickly than a keyword search. There are two ways to get to the Advanced Search page. For those with an ATE Central account, simply log in and you will see the Advanced Search option in the upper right under the search box. Otherwise, selecting “refine search” after conducting a keyword search will pull up the page. As with most search engines, some simple tips and tricks can help you optimize your search to maximize its effectiveness. Check out the bottom of the Advanced Search page for a helpful guide.

Faceted Search
If you would like to narrow your search results even further, faceted search can be a useful tool. After conducting a keyword search, facets (on the left-hand side of the results page) can be used to refine your search further. For example, once you have search results for high school biology education, you can further narrow them by resource type, language, or a handful of other attributes.

Browsing
If you're not looking for a particular item or keyword, but are interested instead in a category of resources or in getting an understanding of the topics covered in ATE Central, you may wish to take advantage of the site’s resource browsing options. From this page, you can use different classifications to browse the collection: ATE Area (Biotechnology, Manufacturing, Engineering, etc.), Education Level (Elementary School High School, Higher Education, etc.), Format (Application, Archive, Document, Video, etc.), GEM Subject (Educational Technology, Health, Science, etc.), and Resource Type (Assessment Material, Dataset, Instructional Material, Professional Development, etc.).

Whether you're interested in expanding your understanding of a specific topic, finding curriculum to use, or merely exploring the breadth and depth of ATE project and center deliverables, smart use of the browse and search functions on ATE Central can help you accomplish your goal.

News & Reminders

Get involved with NSF’s Community College Innovation Challenge (CCIC).

The National Science Foundation invites teams of community college students to participate in the third annual Community College Innovation Challenge (CCIC). Teams will submit innovative STEM-based solutions for real-world problems across three themes: Maker to Manufacturer, Energy and Environment, and Security Technologies. All entries must be received during the competition submission window, from October 17, 2016 to February 15, 2017. More information can be found on the challenge website.

Archiving your deliverables with ATE Central is now easier than ever!

Upload your curriculum, professional development materials, or other deliverables created with ATE funding directly to the ATE Central resource portal via the new archive submission form.

Is your project/center on Facebook, Twitter, or another social media site?

If so, please make sure we've found that site and added it to the ATE Social Media Directory. Having your social media presence linked through the directory will help ensure that interested parties can find you online. In addition, if you currently publish a newsletter, please let us know, as we will be adding links to newsletters to the information available on ATE Central.

Can CWIS software help support your project goals?

CWIS is open source software, created with NSF funding, that can help your project or center showcase resources online. It's free and very easy to use. The latest version (CWIS 3.9.1 beta) was released on and is available for download on the Scout site. Please email cwis@scout.wisc.edu if you have any questions or would like a quick tour of its features!

Follow ATE Central on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with all things new at ATE Central and in the ATE Community as well as in the world of STEM Education.
