In addition, we will also highlight an educational topic with complementary resources found within ATE Central to help illustrate how ATE resources can be used in the classroom.

From Pathways to Diesel Technology Careers for High School and Community College Students:

These documents could be useful to similar projects or centers hoping to create their own outreach documents. The outreach documents consist of two flyers and a survey from Northeastern Technical College that highlight the certificates and courses offered by the college's diesel mechanics program. One flyer targets high school students and highlights courses in diesel equipment service and diagnostics, as well as air brakes systems. This flyer also advertises a paid internship. The other flyer provides general information on diesel technology certificates. Certificates include automotive repair, preventative diesel maintenance, diesel electronics, diesel engine repair, and semi-truck drivetrain. The survey assesses student knowledge of STEM pathways and careers for evaluation purposes and program improvements.

This page from the Center for Aviation and Automotive Technical Education (CA2VES) and the Florida Advanced Technological Education Center for Manufacturing (FLATE) provides a lesson plan for high school students entitled, "Manufacturing Your Way to a Brighter Future." This 7-page lesson plan invites students to explore the possibility of careers in manufacturing. There are three 45-minute learning modules provided on the PDF document.

Introduction Of the Electrified Vehicle Systems Standards Based Training With Certification

This webinar is part of a series of Mindful Mobility Tech Talks hosted by the Columbia-Willamette Clean Cities Coalition. In the webinar, speakers introduce the Electrified Vehicle Systems Standards based Training for a level 1 certification, developed by the Northwest Engineering and Vehicle Technology Exchange (NEVTEX). This session focuses on manual service disconnects, interlock circuits, high voltage bus discharge, and isolation fault monitoring circuits. The video highlights the three levels of electrified vehicle systems (EVS) standards and certification, pathways towards certification, adaptive learning, on-demand training, hands-on training, industry partners, and certification resources. Two ATE Community Blog Posts Highlight ATE Projects

The National Science Foundation (NSF) annually funds approximately 12,000 new awards, with an average funding duration of three years. Each year some of those new awards are supported by the ATE Program, which focuses on improving and expanding educational programs for skilled workers in high-tech STEM fields. Below we are highlighting two new blog posts about ATE funded projects--one from the ATE Impacts blog about four newly funded projects, and the other from InovATEBIO's blog showcasing the work of a specific ATE project that focuses on helping build more inclusive environments.

ATE Impacts Blog Highlights Four Newly Funded ATE Projects

This post from the ATE Impacts blog, shares details about four newly funded ATE projects focused on a variety of fields and technologies and based at institutions across the country. Milwaukee Area Technical College's ATE project connects underserved populations with education and careers in advanced building technology; Hawai?i Community College aims to create a new certificate program that prepares students to enter the workforce with skills in collecting and managing remote sensing data used in geospatial analysis; The Florida State College at Jacksonville looks to address industry needs for technician education on battery technologies for electric vehicles; and finally, Frederick Community College's new project will focus on meeting the growing industry need for technicians with cell therapy and flow cytometry skills.

ATE Project's Work and Impacts Featured on InnovATEBIO

Building on work done under two awards from NSF's ATE program, the ATE project A Collaborative Approach to Work-Based Learning in Biotechnology: Building Inclusive Lab Environments, was recently featured on InnovATEBIO's blog. This post highlights their new Inclusive Research Mentor-Manager Training series, which aims to help life science labs and organizations build inclusive management practices and workplaces. The training focused on teaching current and future industry professionals best practices for training, managing, and supporting interns and employees of diverse backgrounds. Participants averaged four workshops each, with 100% of respondents agreeing that "The workshop was a good use of my time." Website Performance

Are you interested in how your project or center's website is performing? If so, you may want to investigate web analytics tools, which measures page views, traffic to your page, clicks, and lots more. There are a variety of reasons to consider using web analytics - seeing who your tweets or Facebook posts are reaching and how people are engaging with your content can help you decide on how to really enhance your web presence.

Interested in learning more about what analytics tools are available? Facebook page insights provides a great guide about how to use the insights tab available on your project or center's Facebook page. If you're interested in examining user behavior on your website, consider Google Analytics, which is one of the best free analytics tools available.

Did You Know?

Maine's community college applications are up 11 percent after introducing free tuition, as of late July. New applications to the community colleges also increased by roughly 13 percent. Tuition reduction or elimination programs are becoming more popular across community colleges across the country. Read more about various community colleges trying out the initiative on Inside Higher Ed.

The Digital Atlas of Idaho

The Digital Atlas of Idaho was created in order to convey the "integration of data on geology, hydrology, biology, climatology, and anthropology onto a common digital map base," and is the result of collaboration between Idaho State University, Boise State University, and the Idaho Museum of Natural History. Visitors to the site can view the areas of study on the home page, which include "Geology," "Biology," and "Geography." Visitors can find such digital exercises as "Butterfly Identification Exercise," "Name That Cloud," and "Geographic Processes and the Visible Landscape."

Snowflakes Nano at its Coolest

This video, lesson plan, and related materials linked above are designed to help audiences understand more about nanoscience by exploring snowflakes ("nano at its coolest"). This resource is one of many from the National Informal STEM Education (NISE) Network, an organization that creates and implements projects to foster informal STEM learning and "bring people together to engage in STEM, understand our world, and build a better future for everyone," through collaboration among researchers, educators, STEM professionals, and others. This particular set of educational resources includes multiple components that will be useful to educators in both formal and informal settings, as well as home schoolers. A 25-minute video provides an example of how the included slideshow resource can be used, which would be helpful for anyone considering using the materials. The page also includes background information that introduces the term "nano" and related concepts such as nanotechnology, nanoscience, and nanoscale science, as well as lots of good information about snowflakes, what they are, how they are formed, and how they relate to the nanoscale world. Lesson plans and support materials, such as templates for making several types of snowflakes out of foam core, are also included.

Geography Now

Geography is sometimes regarded as a dry topic, but really it can be a fascinating subject with connections to a broad range of disciplines, from sociology and political science to economics and ecology. Educators and learners looking for fast-paced and engrossing primers on the topic will love Geography Now, a long-running YouTube channel that produces informative videos for every country on Earth in alphabetical order. Episodes vary in length depending on the country, but they are well-edited and tightly scripted and cover content such as flag design, political and physical geography, demographics, and relations with neighboring countries. Geography Now also post travel videos, "behind-the-scenes" content showcasing the process of researching and creating scripts for episodes, and "geograbee" competitions in which contestants answer geography questions.

News & Reminders

Mentor-Connect Opens to All STEM Faculty Involved in Technician Education

All two-year college STEM faculty involved in technician education are now eligible for Mentor-Connect mentoring to prepare applications for Advanced Technological Education (ATE) grants from the National Science Foundation. For the past decade, Mentor-Connect's cohort mentoring was available only to faculty at two-year colleges that had not had ATE grants in the past seven years.

Mentor-Connect selects 20 to 22 college teams to receive mentoring during the nine months that they are developing ATE grant proposals for improving some aspect of technician education. Mentor-Connect mentors are community college educators who have had successful ATE grants.

Applications for Mentor-Connect mentoring are due October 7.

Upcoming Event: 2022 ATE Annual PI Conference

The 2022 ATE Conference: Reconnecting & Advancing the Skilled Technical Workforce will be held as an in-person event with a virtual track participation option. ATE grantees may elect to fulfill their NSF grant requirement through participation in the in-person event and/or the virtual components of this conference.

The conference will bring together more than 850 NSF ATE grantees and their project partners to focus on the critical issues related to advanced technological education. Key people working on ATE projects across the country will participate in the hybrid event. Conference participants represent community colleges, business and industry, secondary school systems, and four-year colleges covering projects in a wide variety of areas, such as information technology, engineering technology, micro- and nanotechnologies, chemical technology, biotechnology, and others.

The conference will kick-off virtually with ATE Connects on Thursday, October 20 and Friday, October 21 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. EDT and be followed by an in-person event taking place at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. on October 26-28, 2022. A post-conference virtual track featuring a few key sessions will be held on Friday, November 4 from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. EDT.

ATE Impacts 2022-2023 Book Showcases Work of ATE Community

We are excited to inform you about the upcoming release of the new ATE Impacts 2022-2023 book! You can order copies of the ATE Impacts book online and digital copies of the book can be accessed on the ATE Impacts site.

The ATE Impacts 2022-2023 book showcases the work of the National Science Foundation's Advanced Technological Education Community. This edition includes a foreword from United States President Joseph Biden. It features the work of 33 projects and 28 centers across the seven ATE areas, as well as applied research. By highlighting the ATE community's successful and innovative work, the book encourages broader participation in the ATE program by academic institutions, educators, and industry partners. Dissemination of the ATE Impacts book advances understanding of the importance of technician education and its role in supporting the high-tech industries that drive the United States' economy.

Open for Applications: CCPI-STEM Fellows

CCPI-STEM Fellows program invites applications for Graduate Fellowships from individuals who are pursuing or beginning to pursue graduate degrees and engage in research related to STEM education and workforce development in community colleges. The application deadline is September 15, 2022. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Check CCPI's website for more information on the application and criteria.

EvaluateUR-CURE Accepting Applications

EvaluateUR-CURE is now accepting applications to participate in the final round of pilot testing during the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 semesters. This opportunity is available through an award from the NSF ATE program to the State University of New York (SUNY) Buffalo State.

EvaluateUR-CURE is a method for evaluating course-based undergraduate research experiences -- CUREs. Combining research into undergraduate courses provides research opportunities for students.

Pilot testing of E-CURE is open to all faculty. Faculty teaching courses with research experiences (CUREs) at community colleges are especially encouraged to apply. A modest stipend is provided for participating in the pilot and providing feedback.
