Published the first Tuesday of each month, the ATE Central Connection is meant to disseminate information to and about ATE centers and projects, providing you with up-to-date ATE news, events, reminders, as well as highlighting new centers, projects, and resources. In addition, we will also highlight an educational topic with complementary resources found within ATE Central to help illustrate how ATE resources can be used in the classroom.

This video from the Convergence College Network (also known as National Convergence Technology Center) quarterly meeting covered cloud open educational resource (OER) courses. In the video, Aparna Godbole discusses two OER courses: "Fundamental of Cloud Computing'' and "Containerization and Micro Services." An OER development grant, overview of course materials, and ways of accessing course materials are highlighted.

OpenStack Cloud Computing Part One

This collection is provided by Trident Technical College and includes OpenStack administration modules and some of the software needed to run OpenStack on a VMware Workstation. During the modules students are given different scenarios that involve working at CLOUDTech, a cloud computing consulting firm. In these scenarios students work in the Cloud hosting department that "provides multiple platform and vendor Cloud hosting services for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS) and many others as a service offerings." During these modules, students "will perform hands-on exercises to learn about the OpenStack Cloud implementation CLOUDTech uses to host customer Cloud environments."

In this feature, ATE Central continues our "I Am ATE" series, which showcases an ATE PI, staff member, industry partner, or other ATE stakeholder. We are excited to help spread the word about the wonderful people who are at the core of the ATE community and the innovative work everyone is doing. Here is an excerpt of the interview:

ATE Central: What are some of the most valuable partnerships you've engaged in as part of your work?

Belknap: We work with the Center for Broadening Participation in STEM ant Arizona State University and Florence Darlington Technical College's ATE-funded Mentor Connect project. This team has been invaluable in helping us shape professional development that really works for the average community college instructor. We can take some well researched and high level concepts and translate them into practices that make impacts in the day to day experiences of students in the classroom.

ATE Central: Could you share a bit about how you've collaborated with others?

Belknap: Our whole project is about engaging instructors and grant professionals in the space to put together what really works. My favorite part is the community of practice we have created at WCC where faculty participants talk about what techniques are working in the class, and develop and share resources.

ATE Success Tips: Outreach

Blogging as an Outreach Tool

The ATE Community creates so many innovative, useful materials that STEM educators and administrators across the country may enjoy. But how do you get the word out about the great work your project or center is doing? One excellent outreach tool is blogging.

A blog generates easily-shareable content that helps tell your organization’s story. This provides readers with a window into the world of your work, following your successes and familiarizing themselves with your team. It doesn’t hurt that this content makes great social media fodder as well!

Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind as you create a blog:

  • Find a blogging platform that works for you.
    There are many options when it comes to selecting a platform for your blog. However, with a careful comparison you can find one that will suit your organization’s needs. Some important factors to consider include: Cost, ease of use, desired features, and required maintenance.
  • Let your project or center’s individuality shine through.
    If you have not yet, take the time to craft a communications strategy that connects your organization’s mission statement to your outreach content.
  • Set a schedule and stick to it.
    ATE Community members are busy, but creating an outreach schedule that sets time aside for activities like blogging will help your project or center meet the NSF’s broader impacts requirements. Posting regularly and being sure to circulate new blog content on social media will also help grow your following and ensure that your readers come back for more.

Did You Know?

Only 6 percent of college transfer applicants resided in ZIP codes with the lowest median household income in the past four years, according to data from the Common App. The report shows that most transfer students are predominantly White students from high-income families. An excellent summary by University Business provides an overview of the report and key findings.

North American Mycological Association

From the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz to the Maine Mycological Association, coast to coast, people are keen on the study of mycology. The North American Mycological Association helps connect these enthusiasts. Launched in 1967, NAMA is a "non-profit organization of professional and amateur mycologists with over 80 affiliated mycological societies in the United States, Canada and Mexico," on a mission to advocate for sustainable studies of mushrooms and to encourage educational and scientific pursuits of mycology. Through NAMA's website, users can browse a list of affiliated clubs (alphabetized by state), as well as access a wealth of resources to further their knowledge and understanding of mycology. Teachers will want to check out the Education page, which contains both basic and complex lesson plans and resources. On the Publications page, users will find the latest editions of The Mycophile (NAMA's bimonthly newsletter) and McIlvainea (NAMA's annual journal), as well as archives of past issues. The Photography page houses images from NAMA's annual photography contest, showcasing captivating and artistic captures of fungi. For information on conferences and workshops related to mycology, see the Events section. The website also features Cultivation, Poisoning, and Art Registry pages, each with resources related to these subsections of mycology.

National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network

Based at Cornell University, the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN) works to provide helpful information about the world of nanotechnology to a range of partners and stakeholders. This fine corner of their site provides interested parties with a range of curriculum materials that covers biology, general science, chemistry, environmental science, and technology. A helpful matrix guides visitors through the availability of different modules throughout grade levels and subject areas. The modules here have creative and engaging titles, such as "Help or Hype: The Ethics of Bio-nanotechnology" and "Powers of Ten with the Blue Morpho Butterfly." Each of the modules is well-developed and include teacher instructions, lecture questions, and a range of seminar-style discussion questions for further exploration.

SENIC: Education Resources

The Southeastern Nanotechnology Infrastructure Corridor (SENIC) is a partnership between the Georgia Institute of Technology's Institute for Electronics and Nanotechnology and the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN). As outlined in its vision statement, SENIC'S aim is to strengthen discovery in nanoscience and nanoengineering in the southeastern US, provide education and outreach, and allow nanotechnology innovations to reach the market quicker. SENIC offers a number of educational resources designed to help students from K-12 through graduate school, as well as members of the general public better understand nanotechnology and its role in engineering projects. One of these resources is the "Particle in a Box Game," which is an interactive computer game that engages students in the differences between classical and quantum mechanics - this page includes a link to where students can play this game online. This collection also includes a resource guide and a series of printable instructional sheets that outline central concepts in nanotechnology.

ATE Central Outreach Kit

The ATE Central Outreach Kit was developed as a tool to assist ATE Principal Investigators (PIs) and staff in effectively planning, monitoring, and executing outreach activities.

ATE Central has given the Outreach Kit a refresh with a new design and content, accompanied by a downloadable Template. The new kit is designed to guide you through a step-by-step process and helps you explore how to identify your primary audiences and stakeholders, determine the partners and resources that can support your efforts, and start considering aspects such as branding and messaging.

By utilizing the kit and template, you will make significant progress towards developing a comprehensive plan that enables you to achieve the objectives of your grant, effectively communicate your outcomes and impacts, and showcase the valuable work of your project or center to a diverse range of stakeholders.

The Outreach Kit can be found on ATE Central's website, under the Resources tab.

New Tool - Calendar Feed

The ATE Central Calendar Feed is an easy to customize tool that enables calendar feeds from the ATE Central Events Calendar to quickly be added to either the Outlook or the Mac Calendar app, and will then automatically display upcoming events of interest based on the keywords you include. You can use the feed to populate your personal calendar or to add lists of upcoming events to your ATE center or project website. For WordPress-based sites, free plugins like ICS Calendar will allow you to use a calendar feed to display a list of upcoming events on your WordPress site. You'll need to sign in to your ATE Central account to create a feed - and it's easy to change your selection of keywords to add or subtract areas of interest over time. ATE Impacts 2022-2023 Book Showcases Work of ATE Community

The ATE Impacts 2022-2023 book showcases the work of the National Science Foundation's Advanced Technological Education Community. This edition includes a foreword from United States President Joseph Biden. It features the work of 33 projects and 28 centers across the seven ATE areas, as well as applied research. By highlighting the ATE community's successful and innovative work, the book encourages broader participation in the ATE program by academic institutions, educators, and industry partners. Dissemination of the ATE Impacts book advances understanding of the importance of technician education and its role in supporting the high-tech industries that drive the United States' economy More information on the book can be found on the ATE Impacts website.
