Introduction to Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Engineering
Program Description:
Lawrence Technical Institute offers a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with six concentrations: alternative energy, automotive manufacturing, nanotechnology, solid mechanics, and thermal fluids, and is built around a core curriculum in thermal science, manufacturing, and mechanical systems.
Course Description:
This three-credit Introduction to Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Engineering was developed with seed funding from the Center for Advanced Automotive Technology (CAAT), and discusses the fundamentals of hybrid electric, hybrid hydraulic and and electric vehicle engineering. The course focuses on hybrid electric and electric vehicle (HEV/EV) mechatronics and components, power flow and management, power storage and design, engineering problems faced when engineering HEV drivetrain systems, and applications for commercial, industrial, and military use.
Course Contents:
This course is composed of 11 modules. These modules include 1) Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (HEV): History Overview and Modern Applications, 2) Power Flow and Power Management Strategies in HEV, 3) Vehicle Dynamics Fundamentals for HEV Modeling and Computer Simulation (MATLAB/Simulink), 4) Vehicle Testing Laboratory Works, 5) Mechanical Drivetrain Engineering, 6) Electric Drives, 7) Wheel-Electric Drive, Suspension System Design, 8) Batteries and Energy Storages, 9) Power Electronics in Hybrid Electric Vehicles, 10) Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles, and 11) Electric Unmanned Ground Vehicle: Computer Modeling and Physical Tests. Included educational materials for this course are a syllabus, PowerPoint presentation slides, along with their associated references in an additional document, homework, and documents and files associated with labs and workshops. The labs and workshops provide students with hands-on experience using 4x4 dynamometers, hydraulically-controlled systems, and simulation software, which is required to open some of the files.
The three-page syllabus includes a description of the course and a course content outline. For orientation purposes, users should begin with the Syllabus.pdf document.
