Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) Automotive Labs
These nine Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) Automotive labs were developed by Lewis and Clark Community College to modify National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) certified courses with HEV technologies. This project was funded by a seed grant from the Center for Advanced Automotive Technologies (CAAT).
An 8-page Compression Testing on HEV with Variable Valve Timing Lab is included. This Lab offers an introduction to cylinder compression tests, and running/dynamic compression tests through a series of instructions and synthesis questions.
A 2-page Locate High Voltage Battery Information Lab is included, which walks students through high voltage battery parts through a series of questions.
The 2-page Demonstrate General Safety When Servicing HEV Lab walks students through important safety measures through a variety of steps and synthesis questions.
The HEV (Toyota Prius) System Overview lab provides students with two pages of questions regarding the specifics of a 2009 Toyota Prius HEV system.
The 6-page Testing HEV Insulation Lab walks students through the process of testing insulation with photographs of lab steps and synthesis questions.
Jump Starting an HEV is a 2-page lab that goes through the steps of jump starting a hybrid electric vehicle, as well as discussing the differences between popular models.
The 3-page Oil and Filter Change on an HEV Lab document provides steps and questions for the process using an HEV vehicle of your choosing.
Servicing HEV System Brakes is a two page lab that provides a brief introduction to HEV’s regenerative braking functions, and includes steps and questions to service.
The 12-page Toyota Hybrid General Service Worksheet covers multiple aspects of HEV service, such as auxiliary battery locations and precautions, high-voltage warning labels and wiring locations, engine maintenance service points, inverter maintenance service points, ATF service points, multi-display screens, and inspection mode.
