Small Scale Stenciling and Sculpting

This lab, presented by the National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure, introduces students to "some of the challenges of making semiconductor chips and waveguides." These parts of electronic circuits will help students to understand the role of nanotechnology and nanofabrication processes and specifically the application of etching in computer chip manufacturing. In this lab, students will learn about etching techniques and etch rates using chalk and vinegar. The process that they will be examining in the lab is similar to the way in which computer chips are created, but on a much larger scale and using different materials. Included in this lab are: a teacher preparation guide, student guide with answers, and a student guide.
