Hybrid Technologies Clinics
Program Description:
These resource were developed by Lansing Community College (LCC) to educate first responders, technicians, and the general public on the operation, technology, and safety concerns related to electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EVs and HEVs). The materials included were used in three separate clinics hosted at LCC and were developed with seed funding from the Center for Advanced Automotive Technology (CAAT). Included materials are four presentations, an EV/HEV identification lab, and two additional documents relating to electricity and EV/HEV batteries. The titles of the three clinics are as follows: (1) Hybrid and Electric Vehicle First Responder Procedures, (2) Service Hybrid Vehicles Safely, and (3) Hybrid and Electric Drive Trains and Types of Batteries.
Program Contents:
The four PowerPoint presentations included in this program include: 1st Responder Safety, which covers Identifying a Hybrid, First Responders Approach, Vehicle Specifics, and Emergency Response Guides (ERG); Service Hybrid Vehicles Safely which covers Vehicle Levels, Voltages, Interpreting Service Information, Hybrid Service Safety, Hybrid Battery Technology and Safety, and Vehicle Inspection; Hybrid and Electric Drive Trains and Types of Batteries, which covers Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Propulsion Systems, Levels of Hybrid Vehicles, Battery Voltages, Chemical Content of Different Types of Batteries, Gasoline-Electric Hybrids, and Hydraulic Hybrids; and a profile of the Chevrolet Volt, which includes an overview and ratings, and outlines of the electric and fuel economy, among other things.
The 12-page Hybrid Vehicle/Hybrid Electric Vehicle Identification Lab .pdf includes instructions for a lab activity and related identification charts.
The 2-page ATV Lab Identification Sheet is a worksheet designed to go along with the lab activity.
The 8-page Battery Kilowatts Rating Sheet is designed to supplement the lab, and includes information and charts related to converting amps, kilowatts, kilowatt-hours, and more.
