How Does Supply Chain Technology Differ From Supply Chain Management?
This 3-page white paper, written by Ned D. Young, discusses the differences between supply chain technology and supply chain management, by defining both concepts, and then describing their purposes. As it is defined in this paper, supply chain management involves "the design, planning, execution, control, and monitoring of supply chain activities with the objective of creating net value, building a competitive infrastructure, leveraging worldwide logistics, synchronizing supply with demand, and measuring performance globally." After discussing details of each concept, Young writes: "one can think of supply chain management as the overarching concept that includes all the activities, processes, and activities required to supply an end product or service to the customer," while supply chain technology "includes the various technologies that are required by the supply chain ... to ensure that the products and services can flow from the initial starting point to the customer."
