Mathematics for Photonics Education: Powers and Roots

This lecture, presented by John Chamberlain, covers the basics of powers and roots as it relates to photonics education. In 25 minutes, Chamberlain covers topics such as powers (repeated multiplications), negative bases, roots, and cube roots. Once the basics are covered, Chamberlain provides numerous examples for students to consider, including calculating the braking distance of a motor vehicle and finding the area of a floor space. Upon completion of the lesson, students should be able to simplify expressions with powers and roots, and solve for a variable in an equation with powers and roots.
