This 2-page lesson plan, provided by Northwestern Connecticut Community College, features an activity that expands students' "knowledge of 3D design and printing by exposing students to manufacturing of everyday objects using an injection molding process." In the activity, students examine everyday objects that were created through a molding process to eventually to create their own mold. Included in the lesson plan are education standards, objectives, materials and technology needed, and a description of the activity. Upon completing the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Describe Injection Molding as a process for transforming raw materials into useful goods
  • Explain that technology used in injection molding is a powerful force that improves human productivity
  • Apply science concepts and math processes through the use of technology with the design process
  • Use the engineering design process

This lesson was created by a middle school teacher after an externship in industry.
