The Stars of the North (SOTN) chapter was formed in 2014 as the Minneapolis area chapter of WAI. With over 250 members, they are proud to represent those in Minnesota – the rich diversity within the commercial, corporate, military, and general aviation sectors, helps showcase the amazing people who are or wish to be aviation professionals.

The chapter holds monthly events with an emphasis on aviation education, networking, and community engagement. In the past, they have held various events, including interview prep workshops, mock interview events, ATC and fire facility tours, community volunteering, holiday parties, and virtual gatherings.

The Underwater Robotics and Engineering Design Professional Development workshop focuses on how to teach the engineering design process using underwater robotics. Participants learn the fundamentals of basic ROV building and experience a variety of hands-on science, technology, and engineering design activities that can be integrated into a class or after school program to reinforce foundational knowledge and skills. Upon completion of the workshop, all participants should feel confident to lead an engineering design activity focused on ROV building using the Pufferfish ROV Kit or comparable parts and components.

As society seeks climate solutions that decarbonize cities and leverage the carbon benefits of forests and trees, mass timber – a family of massive engineered wood building construction materials used in primarily in large buildings – is frequently cited as a powerful tool to achieve multiple benefits. Nationwide, more mass timber apartment buildings, community centers, schools, and offices are opening their doors, and domestic mass timber supply is gradually increasing as well. As mass timber momentum builds, leaders across the U.S. are working to facilitate mass timber ecosystems that maximize mass timber’s forest, carbon, and climate benefits in ways that reflect the specific needs and contexts of the communities and environments in those regions.

In her 2023 book, “Designing Forests and Other Mass Timber Futures,” NYC architect and educator Lindsey Wikstrom investigated mass timber supply chains to understand how growing mass timber’s presence in the built environment can best respect, protect, and benefit communities, cultures, economies, and the built environment.

Wikstrom moderates a panel of mass timber leaders from across the U.S. who will highlight programs, policies, people, and practices that are advancing mass timber ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest, Colorado, Michigan/the Great Lakes Region, George, New England, and New York City.

The National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers (NCATC) is an Affiliated Council of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) catalyzing a network of higher education and industry-led Strategic Partner resources that advocates, advises, and promotes the use of advanced technology applications to enhance economic and workforce development programs and services.

With over 160 members from community and technical colleges, universities, CTE high schools, adult education organizations and the corporate community, NCATC provides great networking opportunities at both their Summer Workshop and Fall Conference every year.
